The sun is really shining

Yesterday was a turning point.

It was sunny and hot. So much so, that when I went to Isaac’s school affer work to see two teachers, I sat in front of them dripping in my cycling kit.

On reaching home there was real evidence of change. Sara and EQ were out on the deck reading and working.
Then I joined in. I put on shorts and jandals for the first time, we cooked on the BBQ and brought  the sun umbrella out.

Now the big question. Is summer here, or was yesterday summer?

Crest of a wave

Can it be any better than this when you are sixteen?

On Monday evening it was the St. Mary’s senior prize giving. A long event as it turned out, from 7pm to 9-30!

However, for Eleanor the time spent was very worthwhile. As well as receiving one of the four academic excellence awards  for her year, she also won the Year 13 prize for German. The latter comes with a big cup!

And today was the leavers mass for  the Year 13 students, and so the appointment of the new leadership team.  Eleanor was interviewed last week for the five posts than run from Head Girl to Special Character captain, Cultural captain, Level leaders captain and Sports captain.

At the end of the mass the new leaders were announced, and Eleanor is now Deputy Head Girl: Special Character. I am sure it is a mark of her personality, character and giving nature.

Her parents are very proud, and she is very pleased; and quite rightly so.

Guy Fawkes on a Cold Windy Wellingon night

Wellington Harbor - Guy Fawkes 2010

Not my photo but it looks good.

I am not sure why Fireworks Night/Guy Fawkes is celebrated here. An anachronism of the colonial ties that do not seem to have been shaken off.

We had our family group meeting at out house again, as we have the boig windows and a deck that faces the right way. However, this year the weather turned a few hours before the show, with the onset of rain, wind and coldness.

The gathering worked as well as usual, though standing outdoors at the appointed time was less than fun.

Hope yours was fun.

Women and soldiers?

Joe is away on a cadet weekend camp, and so  wanted his photos taken before the off. Eleanor of course needed some attention so barged into the photos.

Joe spent Friday night in the cadet hall, then was due to be up at dawn fro breakfast before going to the campsite on the southern coast of Wellington. We will soon find out hwo it went, but given the weather has been cold and windy since Friday evening, then maybe ‘challenging’ will be the answer.

A long League-ee weekend

This entry is very slow off the mark. Last weekend was the first long weekend for a while. Labour weekend came with cloud and little sunshine and warmth in Wellington, whereas, elsewhere it as cooking. Or so it seems.

What did we do? The things one always does on a holiday weekend-gardening. Cutting the grass, weeding, cutting the hedges and planting up pots. what more could you ask for-just a little bit of sunburn.

Aside of that we did do something different. We went to see the Rugby League international between Engalnd and the Kiwis. The four nations is being played in Australasia curently, and features Australia and PNG as well. It was only the fourth game I have seen live, rather than on tv. So the perspective was quite different but all the same time, interesting to appreciate more of the action.  England lost, and even I could appreciate their limitations. It was not a great game as both teams made more errors than you would expect. More action on the tv this coming weekend, and probably more gardening.
