The holiday was in three stages, more info to come, but here is the map and a short clip

Garden of Eden

We are back in residence, and the garden has been enjoying the sunshine while we have been away. The courgettes are a fierce size if left to their own devices, and the plant is a picture of health. we have learnt that carrots do like a well drained soil, and remedial action has already been implemented on that front, and so we hope future plants will be that much better. My potatoes are looking good so far, with large healthy leaves. The tomatoes have lots of flowers, and so far an occasional fruit. We future is looking good.

Tom and Barbara are alive and well

Yes, the Goods live in Wellington.

We have done our planting, but are yet to reap the benefits of our industrious self sufficiency.
The potatoes are in and sprouting, the tomatoes are in fine shape, despite an attack of hail stones at a very vulnerable point in their growth. The bath tub, with its recent additional drainage holes, displays some healthy carrots, lettuces and radishes.
We have just found some space for leak and

The high point in future will be our citrus section. The lemon bush replaces the one that produced extremely well, but met an in explicable end, and has been joined by orange and satsuma trees. We do live in tropical Wellington.

We are yet to reach the high levels of the chicken farmers in West Sussex or urban Manchester, but are hopeful, and will display photos in due course of our bounty.

Blackcaps and the West Indies

The third one-dayer was played at the famous Westpac yesterday. Joe was therefrom just about the start, but even so missed the first two Windies wickets. I was watching the score during the afternoon at work, via ‘tinterent. By the time it came to going home I was seriously wondering if it was worth going to the game fo the the evening session. The Windies were poor, all out for 128, managing to squeeze about 40 of their 50 overs.
I turned up for the Blackcap’s inning, and joined the rest of the 10, 000 or so. There was big hitting and runs at the start, but McCullum went too big and was caught on the boundary, with Ryder blowing his brains by going for the hit the next ball and also being caught.
Then there was as struggle, and they lost another wicket, and could have been two more within an over.
It was good to watch the cricket live, and there were good aspects.
Powell looks a fine athlete and with a mean steak. When Taylor should have been given out caught off the glove down the leg side, Powell was not impressed, and sent down a

fast bouncer that the keeper missed, and then gave the batsman lots of eyeball.
The game finished when Gayle with his slow left arm spin bounced the batsman, the keeper missed it, they ran two, and given a wide on top. So a starling way to finish, but typical of the game.

Overall, my visit, not great value, $27 for 20 overs. Joe was happy all the same.

In reality, two poor teams, and NZ came out on top. The Blackcaps should go onto to win the series.

England one would expect to win the series in the Caribbean on this showing, though with current turmoil who knows.

Golf

The clubs came out this week in response to Joseph’s present to me of some golf balls, and some prodding on his part. So off to the range we went, myself and the boys.
My clubs were in less than ideal condition-rusty! It is three years since I used them, and they have been sitting under the house.
At the range I was imparting my skills to the boys! Oh dear. Well I do know the simple stuff. They had a good time and now are hooked. I was quite pleased with myself, feeling I hit the ball quite well, despite it being 18 months since I swung in anger, when in Spain. When in fact I beat my brother twice-much to his disappointment.
Hopefully now the clubs are clean after the attention of my two sons, and they will be in better condition for the next time the Quirke males are down the range.
Joe is having group lessons when he goes to his new school-maybe this is going to be his sport?

New Year’s Day

Today is the day after the year before.

Last night we actually stayed up to greet he new year in. We toasted with bubbles as we listened to some cheesy radio station, and shouted out the count down. We went to bed too late, and so were a bit tired this morning. This did not stop “Eddy Merckx” from jumping onto the saddle and doing 15 Km along the hilly roads od Wellington. From Khandallah to Wadestown, and down to the Hutt road, then up Ngaio Gorge, for those in the know locally. The training is on course.

The sun has been bright and warm, though the wind stronger than one would want. We managed a walk up Kaukau, and the boys did their thing in Khandallah pool. Home for a takeaway, and to watch “Pretty Woman” on the tv. A standard holiday.

Regards to all

Tour de Wellington

The bike might not look much but the new shirt is the “DBs“. I am back in the exercise phase, and because of the previous knee issue, and concern about causing further damage, the bike is back in the frame for exercise activity. The bike is not a new one, being the same one I did the triathlon with in 1997, and it was second hand then. It still works however, though has had to have a few repairs. The shirt is a present, and damn cool, and I am sure makes me go more quickly, and stops the thighs hurting so much. Obviously I do not look as good as the cycling exponent in Bedfordshire, and I do not as yet have meter to measure my total “Ks”.

Yo Ho Ho

Hello, the Christmas Day has arrived.

Yesterday we jumped into the activities. I finished work early, and drove past the shopping centre that was heaving with last minute buyers; one day the “credit crunch” did not apply. We went to Mass at St Bens with carols and a reading and partial acting of the nativity.
Then it was home for bubbles and family meal, and listening to Johnny Walker on Radio 2 via ‘tinternet. Along with the music and banter, it was fun listening to the traffic reports!
I spoke to Anthony and was accused of having had too much Communion wine.

Overnight Santa arrived, and amazingly Isaac was still deserving of presents. The boys left out his whisky and mince pies, which he dutifully consumed on arrival. The reindeer also had some carrots.

The sun is coming out now to make it look more like a “Downunder” Christmas. Breakfast has been cooked on the barby. The Santa presents have been opened, the others are bulging under the “enormous” tree.

We are just about to go out for our walk on the beach, with more pressies and food and wine to come. Of course, we plan to watch the Christmas Day movie on the television later on.
All very familiar.

Merry Christmas to all.
